Andrew Macfarlane has a background of advice and practical application across all farming sectors.

He is a strategic thinker who is passionate about food production, farm management systems, sustainable use of water, environmental values and the leveraging of science, education and communication strategies to frame business outcomes and enhance the NZ brand.

Andrew, his wife Tricia and their family, farm irrigated land in Mid Canterbury, focused mainly on dairy, but also including meat and arable production. Their farms are recognised for balancing high production with environmental outcomes. Their home farm “Pencarrow” was awarded the Ballance Farm Environment Award in 2003. A second property “Kintore”, in which his family has a major equity share won the Dairy Farm Award, Energy Excellence Award, and Integrated Management Award in the 2013 Ballance Awards.

While overseeing management of the farm and commercial property businesses, and alongside his governance roles, Andrew still practices as a registered Farm Management Consultant as principal of Macfarlane Rural Business. Within the farm management consultancy practice Andrew works at a strategic level as well as with individual farming families. He is known for his expertise and experience in water, soil, and nutrient management issues both at an on-farm and regional level. He also has particular expertise in understanding financial metrics around on-farm systems.

Andrew is a past New Zealand President of the New Zealand Institute of Primary Industry Management, responsible for New Zealand’s rural professionals. He has a particular interest in building depth in the numbers and quality of young professionals entering the rural sector. He is a Director of ANZCO (one of New Zealand’s largest meat exporters), AgResearch (New Zealand’s Government owned agricultural research organisation, Ngai Tahu Farming, a member of the Lincoln University Council, and Chairman of Deer Industry NZ (the body responsible for looking after the interests of New Zealand’s venison and velvet producers and marketers).

Andrew is a keen long distance off road runner and tramper and a close follower of New Zealand rugby. Andrew and Tricia have four children (Thomas, Julia, James & Lauren) all of whom are pursuing their own professional and personal goals.
